Date: 28 December 2023
The African Disaster Mitigation Research Center (ADMiR) is proud to announce the launch of its Gender Equality Plan, reflecting our unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment that promotes gender equality across all aspects of our operations. Recognizing that gender balance and diversity are critical to enhancing disaster mitigation research, this plan serves as a guiding framework for our initiatives moving forward.
Key Objectives of the Gender Equality Plan:
-
Promoting Gender Balance: ADMiR is dedicated to achieving and maintaining gender balance at every level, from research teams to leadership positions, ensuring equal opportunities for all.
-
Inclusive Research: We will integrate a gender perspective into disaster mitigation research by recognizing the diverse impacts of disasters on marginalized groups, especially women and children. Our research will address varied experiences, vulnerabilities, and needs to develop equitable and effective disaster resilience strategies.
-
Capacity Building: To cultivate a respectful and inclusive work culture, we will implement training programs aimed at enhancing gender awareness and sensitivity among all ADMiR staff, fostering continuous learning and professional development opportunities.
-
Equal Representation: ADMiR is committed to ensuring equal representation of women and men in decision-making processes, committees, and conferences related to disaster mitigation, valuing and amplifying diverse voices.
-
Work-Life Balance: We will implement family-friendly policies that support work-life balance, including flexible working hours, parental leave, family care leave, and maternity leave, to meet the diverse needs of our staff.
-
Preventing Harassment and Discrimination: ADMiR will establish a zero-tolerance policy for gender-based harassment and discrimination, providing mechanisms for reporting incidents and ensuring prompt, appropriate action.
Implementation Strategies:
To effectively realize these objectives, we will conduct a baseline assessment of our current gender balance and inclusivity, develop tailored training programs, review selection processes to eliminate bias, introduce flexible working policies, seek partnerships with like-minded organizations, and establish mechanisms for ongoing monitoring and evaluation.
Accountability:
ADMiR leadership is fully committed to overseeing the implementation of this Gender Equality Plan, with a designated focal point responsible for coordinating gender-related initiatives and ensuring accountability at all levels.
Conclusion:
Through the implementation of this Gender Equality Plan, ADMiR aims to cultivate a workplace that values diversity and promotes inclusivity, thereby contributing to robust and comprehensive disaster mitigation research. This initiative underscores our dedication to advancing gender equality as part of our broader commitment to sustainable development in Africa.
