2026-07-28

BEIJING, China — The African Disaster Mitigation Research Center (ADMiR) was represented at the inaugural meeting of the IASPEI Commission on Rapid Interdisciplinary Investigation of Significant Earthquakes (Ri2SE), held in Beijing, China.

Prof. Mohamed ElGabry, Director of ADMiR and Board Member of the Ri2SE Commission, delivered the opening address on behalf of the center.

The meeting marks the first official operational milestone for the commission since its inception. Established under the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth’s Interior (IASPEI), the Ri2SE Commission works to strengthen global frameworks for rapid post-earthquake data gathering, field investigation, and cross-border scientific collaboration.

Speaking at the event, Prof. ElGabry emphasized the critical importance of international scientific exchange and swift, coordinated post-event research in advancing global disaster risk reduction. He highlighted how joint interdisciplinary investigations help translate scientific observations into actionable policies that protect vulnerable communities and infrastructure.

ADMiR extended its sincere appreciation to the host organizations—the China Earthquake Administration and the Institute of Earthquake Forecasting—for their hospitality, organization, and continued partnership in global seismic risk reduction initiatives.

Through its active role within the IASPEI Ri2SE Commission, ADMiR continues to strengthen Africa’s engagement in global solid-Earth research networks, advancing research-driven resilience and capacity building across the continent
